He served as Archbishop of Armagh from 1653 until his death in 1702, making him the longest-serving Archbishop in Irish history. Boyle's tenure as Lord Chancellor of Ireland, which began in 1661, was marked by his efforts to promote peace and stability in the troubled country. He worked tirelessly to reconcile the Catholic and Protestant communities, and played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of Limerick in 1691, which ended the Williamite War in Ireland.
