Michelangelo Buonarroti, commonly known as Michelangelo or Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564), was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance. Born in Caprese, Tuscany, Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest artists in history, leaving an indelible mark on Western art with his groundbreaking works in various mediums. Michelangelo's prodigious talent was evident from an early age. He was apprenticed to the painter Domengettio Ghirlandaio at the age of 13, but he was more interested in sculpture. He studied the works of ancient Roman sculpture and the sculpture of Donatello, and his mastery of the medium was evident in his earliest works, such as the Pieta (1498-1499), a marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus. Michelangelo's most famous works include the statue of David (1501-1504), the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508-1512), and the Last Judgment (1534-1541) on the same chapel's wall. His architectural designs include the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Michelangelo's poetry, mainly sonnets, reflects his deep understanding of human emotion and his religious beliefs. He was also an accomplished musician and played the lyre. Michelangelo's influence on Western art is immeasurable, and his works continue to inspire artists and art lovers around the world. His mastery of the human form, his innovative use of perspective, and his exploration of the complexities of the human experience have made him a towering figure in the history of art.
