Melanocephalus Collection

Melanocephalus is a genus of primates belonging to the Pitheciidae family, and are found in the tropical forests of South America, primarily in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. The species is characterized by its black head and white body and has a long snout with a wide muzzle and large eyes. Its fur is short and dense, ranging from gray to reddish-brown in color and has long arms with curved fingers for climbing trees, as well as strong hind legs for leaping between branches. Melanocephalus feeds on fruits, seeds and insects found in the canopy layer of the forest. They live in small groups or family units consisting of one male and several females with their offspring, and are active during the day but can also be seen at night when they come down to ground level to feed on fallen fruit or leaves from trees that have been disturbed by other animals or humans.
