This exquisite oval portrait captures the scholarly and refined image of Emanuel van Meteren, a prominent Flemish historian and antiquarian born in Meeteren, near Boulonois, in 1535. The artist has skillfully rendered Van Meteren's fur-trimmed ruff, a fashionable accessory of the time, and his piercing gaze, which conveys a deep sense of intellectual curiosity and dedication to his craft. Van Meteren's historical works, which focused on the history of the Low Countries, were highly regarded during the 16th and 17th centuries.
