EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite oval portrait captures the scholarly and refined image of Emanuel van Meteren, a prominent Flemish historian and antiquarian born in Meeteren, near Boulonois, in 1535. The artist has skillfully rendered Van Meteren's fur-trimmed ruff, a fashionable accessory of the time, and his piercing gaze, which conveys a deep sense of intellectual curiosity and dedication to his craft. Van Meteren's historical works, which focused on the history of the Low Countries, were highly regarded during the 16th and 17th centuries. His most notable publications include "Annales et Historiarum Belgicarum Libri Duodecim" (Twelve Books of the Annals and History of the Low Countries), published in 1566, and "Historiae Illustres et Memorabiles Ducum et Comitum Flandriarum" (Illustrious and Memorable Histories of the Dukes and Counts of Flanders), published in 1577. The year 1566 marked a significant turning point in Van Meteren's life. He was appointed as the official historian to the Council of State of the Habsburg Netherlands, a position that granted him access to a wealth of primary sources and allowed him to delve deeper into the rich history of the region. Despite the challenges of working during a time of political instability and religious conflict, Van Meteren's commitment to preserving the history of the Low Countries remained unwavering. His meticulous research and dedication to accuracy earned him the respect and admiration of his contemporaries, and his works continue to be valued by historians and scholars today. This portrait, likely taken around 1612, serves as a testament to Van Meteren's intellectual prowess and his enduring legacy as a Flemish historian.
