False-col SEM of the head of a black garden ant

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a black garden ant Lasius niger, an infertile female worker. This species lives under stones at the edges of lawns & paths, feeding on caterpillars, earwigs, woodlice & other ants. It has a close relationship with Aphis fabae, the broad bean aphid, which it strokes with its antennae to make it discharge a drop of honeydew, additional nourishment for the ant. In return, the ant protects the aphid by removing nearby eggs of predators such as ladybirds & lacewings. It is a formicine ant, which means that it squirts a jet of corrosive formic acid at attackers. Magnificat- ion: x20 at 35mm size, x35 at 6x4.5cm size. This is full-colour version. BW version is Z345/050

This print showcases the intricate details of a black garden ant's head, captured through false-colour scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The subject of this image is an infertile female worker from the species Lasius niger, commonly found residing under stones at the periphery of lawns and paths. These resourceful ants sustain themselves by preying on caterpillars, earwigs, woodlice, and even other ants. What makes this ant particularly fascinating is its symbiotic relationship with Aphis fabae, also known as the broad bean aphid. By delicately stroking the aphid with its antennae, the ant prompts it to release a droplet of honeydew – an additional source of nourishment for itself. In return for this sweet reward, the diligent ant safeguards its aphid companion by eliminating nearby eggs belonging to predators like ladybirds and lacewings. Belonging to the formicine ant family, this remarkable creature possesses a unique defense mechanism: when threatened by attackers, it squirts a potent jet of corrosive formic acid. This SEM image magnifies these astonishing features twenty times at 35mm size or thirty-five times at 6x4.5cm size. Displayed in full color in this particular version - though available in black and white as well - this photograph offers viewers an extraordinary glimpse into nature's intricacies.
