Because Ilford fire-women who are competing in a tug-o
Because Ilford fire-women who are competing in a tug-o -war tournament in Walthamstow on Whit Monday have no team with which to practise, they carry out their training on a piece of waste ground near their station with the aid of a " Heath Robinson" apparatus.
This novel device consists of a miscellaneous collection of articles, including a motor axle, dust bins and buckets filled with cement, which are suspended from scaffolding poles by means of ropes and pulleys.
When the girls start pulling, up go these improvised weights, borrowed from a neigbouring scrap
heap. A fireman who is interested in their training acts as an extra weight and as he shoots up gets an idea of the constistency of their heaves.
The team is representative of all branches of the National Fire Service (NFS) and equally varied were the professions of these girls in peacetime.
Ruth Wilkinson was a window cleaner, Holder Hunter a private secretary, Minnie Coblentz a book-keeper and Alice Doyle a statistical clerk.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the indomitable spirit of the Ilford fire-women as they prepare for a tug-of-war tournament in Walthamstow on Whit Monday. With no official team to practice with, these determined women have transformed a piece of waste ground near their station into a makeshift training ground. And what an ingenious contraption they have devised! Dubbed the "Heath Robinson" apparatus, this unique device is a hodgepodge of discarded items including a motor axle, dust bins, and buckets filled with cement. Suspended from scaffolding poles by ropes and pulleys, these improvised weights serve as their training partners. To add an extra challenge to their workouts, a supportive fireman joins them as he acts as an additional weight. Representing various branches of the National Fire Service (NFS), this diverse team showcases not only their physical strength but also their varied professions during peacetime. Ruth Wilkinson was once a window cleaner, Holder Hunter worked as a private secretary, Minnie Coblentz excelled in bookkeeping, and Alice Doyle served as a statistical clerk. Taken on May 10th in 1944 by photographer George Greenwell, this historic image serves as both testament to the resilience of these remarkable women and tribute to their dedication towards honing their skills amidst challenging circumstances.
