Great destruction was caused to the oil refinery at Donges near St. Nazaire, by aircraft cf RAF Bomber Command in two-raids, the first on the night of 23rd -24th July and the second on 24th -25th July.
Storage tanks were demolished or punctured. Buildings were either destroyed or very badly damaged, and rail sidings and loading facilities disrupted.
Photo shows: A reconnaissance photograph taken after the first attack on Donges on the night of July 23/24 shows, some of the destroyed oil storage tanks, one of which is* still burning, filling the sky with great clouds of black oily smoke.
