RAF Balloon Barrage men were among the first Allied troops to land on the beaches at

RAF Balloon Barrage men were among the first Allied troops to land on the beaches at Salerno, Southern Italy. Their job was to keep low flying enemy aircraft from bombing and strafing the landing barges as they came in ashore. The detachment landed with their balloons in theGulf of Salerno before daylight on invasion day. They waded ashore through three feet of water carrying their balloons, and planted them on the beach in the face of heavy machine gun and mortar fire. The balloons were flying 200 ft high as they came ashore and were let up to operational height on small hand winches as soon as the men stepped onto the mainland.
Picture shows: An airman of the ground crew manhandles a balloon while it is being anchored on the beach. German guns and aircraft shot these balloons while they were being flown to cover the Allied landings.

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the bravery and determination of the RAF Balloon Barrage men during the Allied invasion of Salerno, Southern Italy in September 1943. As one of the first troops to land on the beaches, their crucial task was to protect landing barges from enemy aircraft bombings and strafing by flying balloons at low altitudes. In this remarkable image, an airman from the ground crew can be seen maneuvering a balloon while it is being anchored on the beach. Despite facing heavy machine gun and mortar fire, these courageous men waded ashore through waist-deep water carrying their balloons before planting them firmly in place. The sight of these balloons soaring 200 feet high provided cover for incoming Allied forces as they stepped onto mainland Europe. However, this vital defense mechanism did not come without risks. German guns and aircraft targeted these balloons during flight, making it even more impressive that they were successfully flown to safeguard the Allied landings. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen during World War II. It showcases both their unwavering commitment to protecting their comrades and their ability to adapt under extreme circumstances. The courage displayed by these RAF Balloon Barrage men played a significant role in ensuring the success of Operation Avalanche and ultimately contributed to liberating Italy from Nazi occupation.
