Naples in Southern Italy, with its open shops displaying gloves, handbags

Naples in Southern Italy, with its open shops displaying gloves, handbags, silk stockings and artificial silk underclothes, looks like fairyland to British servicemen who have spent months in the Western Desert and North Africa.
There has been a rush to buy presents to catch the Christmas mail for England and other parts of the Empire.
An RAF photographer goes shopping with two airmen of the RAF, Corporal Derek Hodgson of Swinside, Keswick, Cumberland and LAC Edward Mawcinnitt of Mexico City, known to his friends as Pedro.
Corporal Hodgson was a quarryman before the war and enlisted in the
RAF in 1939. He spent his first war Xmas at home, the seoond in Serafin in Palestine, the third at Tmimi
in Cyreraica, the fourth at Marble Arch during the advance to Tripoli.
Mawcinnitt went to Mexico City when he was 8. In 1942 he left his general merchandise business and enlisted in the RAF Regiment as a ground gunner.
Photo Shows: Hodgson (nearest camera) and Mawcinnitt almost forgot the inevitable picture postcard shop when they decided to call it a day.

EDITORS COMMENTS

Captured in this print is the enchanting city of Naples in Southern Italy, a sight that brings immense joy to British servicemen who have endured months in the harsh landscapes of the Western Desert and North Africa. The open shops lining the streets proudly display an array of exquisite gloves, handbags, silk stockings, and artificial silk underclothes, transforming Naples into a mesmerizing fairyland for these weary soldiers. With Christmas approaching, there is an overwhelming rush among them to purchase presents that will catch the holiday mail destined for England and other parts of the Empire. Accompanied by an RAF photographer, Corporal Derek Hodgson from Swinside, Keswick and LAC Edward Mawcinnitt from Mexico City embark on a shopping expedition through this magical city. Corporal Hodgson's journey has taken him from being a quarryman before the war to enlisting in the RAF in 1939. He spent his first wartime Christmas at home but subsequent ones were celebrated amidst various locations such as Serafin in Palestine, Tmimi in Cyreraica, and Marble Arch during the advance to Tripoli. As for Mawcinnitt, he left behind his thriving general merchandise business in Mexico City when he enlisted as a ground gunner with the RAF Regiment in 1942. Together with their shared sense of wonderment and camaraderie forged through their service commitments abroad, Hodgson and Mawcinnitt almost forget about time when they stumble upon a picture postcard shop while calling it quits after an eventful day. This photograph was captured by an official RAF photographer back in December 1943; it serves as both a cherished memory for those involved and a testament to resilience amidst tumultuous times.
