Suez Crisis 1956
Royal Engineers in Port Said in Egypt build a Bailey Bridge over the Suez Canal 1956
These British troops were posted in Egypt to fight in what became known as the Suez Crisis, a failed military adventure which attempted to regain international control of the Suez Canal, precipitated by the nationalization of the canal by Egypts President Nasser in October 1956. The international action was led by an Israeli attack, followed by the landing of British and French troops. The result...a Soviet protest, domestic opposition and non-support from America, led to the withdrawl of troops and Edens resignation. Even after stepping down, Eden maintained that his actions to regain control of the Suez Canal were justified. The crisis strained relations between Britain, France, the US and the Commonwealth for some time to come

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Memory Lane Prints captures a significant moment in history - the Suez Crisis of 1956. In the image, Royal Engineers can be seen diligently constructing a Bailey Bridge over the iconic Suez Canal in Port Said, Egypt. These British troops were deployed to Egypt as part of an ill-fated military endeavor aimed at regaining international control of the canal. The Suez Crisis was sparked by Egyptian President Nasser's decision to nationalize the canal in October 1956. The ensuing international response saw Israel launching an attack, followed by British and French forces landing on Egyptian soil. However, their actions faced opposition from various quarters including Soviet protests, domestic resistance, and lack of support from America. Ultimately, this turbulent turn of events led to the withdrawal of troops and Prime Minister Eden's resignation. Despite stepping down from office, Eden staunchly defended his decision to regain control over the vital waterway. The repercussions of this crisis reverberated for years afterward and strained relations between Britain, France, the United States, and Commonwealth nations. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of a failed military adventure but also highlights how political decisions can have far-reaching consequences that shape global dynamics for generations to come.
