Field Marshal Lord Plumer under the arch of the memorial to the 54

Field Marshal Lord Plumer under the arch of the memorial to the 54, 000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers lost on the battlefield of the Ypres Salient. The memorial at Ypres is located at the eastern exit of the town and marks the starting point for one of the main roads out of the town that led Allied soldiers to the front line. The arch known as the Menin Gate was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. Field Marshal Lord Plumer made light of why the memorial had been constructed and sited at Ypres during his speech at the dedication. " It was resolved that here at Ypres, where so many of the missing are known to have fallen, there should be erected a memorial worthy of them which should give expression to the nations gratitude for their sacrifice and its sympathy with those who mourned them. A memorial has been erected which, in its simple grandeur, fulfils this object, and now it can be said of each one in whose honour we are assembled here today: he is not missing; he is here. At the end of the speech he pulled a rope and the flags covering a plaque below the sculpture of a British lion were revealed: To the armies of the British Empire who stood here from 1914 - 1918 and to those of their dead who have no known grave. 24th July 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Field Marshal Lord Plumer standing under the majestic arch of the memorial to the 54,000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers lost on the battlefield of the Ypres Salient. Located at the eastern exit of Ypres, this solemn monument marks the starting point for one of the main roads that led Allied soldiers to face their destiny on the front line. Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, known as the Menin Gate, this arch holds great significance in commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I. During his speech at its dedication, Field Marshal Lord Plumer humorously acknowledged why such a memorial was constructed and placed in Ypres. He emphasized that it was chosen because many fallen soldiers were known to have perished here and deserved a worthy tribute expressing nations' gratitude for their sacrifice and sympathy towards those mourning them. In an emotional moment during his speech, Field Marshal Lord Plumer pulled a rope unveiling flags covering a plaque beneath a sculpture of a British lion. The inscription read: "To armies of the British Empire who stood here from 1914-1918 and to those of their dead who have no known grave". This powerful gesture affirmed that although physically absent, these brave souls were not truly missing but forever present in our hearts. This remarkable photograph is an evocative reminder of both human resilience and collective remembrance—a timeless tribute captured by Memory Lane Prints.
