Traffic in Redcliffe - including horse drawn transport - was in the late 1940s
Traffic in Redcliffe - including horse drawn transport - was in the late 1940s. Redcliffe Wharf (which still awaits re-development) was then being used by the Corporations Transport Dept. for the storage of salt, sand etc. To the right of the photo is the old Redcliffe shot-tower, sadly demolished for road improvements in 1968. Few of the bomb damaged buildings to the left, and middle, of the photo have survived the years. 1st June 1949

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Redcliffe in the late 1940s. The scene is a snapshot of a bygone era, where horse-drawn transport still shared the roads with cars and lorries. It's a nostalgic flashback to a time when life moved at a slower pace. In the foreground, we see Redcliffe Wharf, which was then utilized by the Corporations Transport Department for storing salt, sand, and other materials. Today, this area continues to await redevelopment but holds onto its historical significance. To the right of the frame stands the old Redcliffe shot-tower, an architectural gem that unfortunately met its demise in 1968 due to road improvements. Its absence serves as a reminder of how progress often comes at a cost. As our gaze shifts towards the left and middle sections of this photograph, we notice several buildings bearing scars from bomb damage during World War II. While some structures have managed to withstand the test of time since this image was captured on June 1st, 1949; many others have not been so fortunate. This remarkable piece captures not only an iconic street scene but also encapsulates an entire era within its frame. It allows us to reflect upon transportation advancements while appreciating remnants of history that continue to shape our present-day landscape.
