Goodbye Britain!: Six couples and three children cut themselves off

Goodbye Britain!: Six couples and three children cut themselves off from twentieth-century Britain on Friday (25-3-77) for a unique journey into the past. In a remote clearing in a wood somewhere in the West Country they volunteered to spend a year in a replica of an Iron Age settlement. The guinea-pigs, who include a doctor, a nurse, a builder and three teachers, will be paid £ 20 a week to live in a model of a British settlement of the year 300 BC for a BBC-TV series. The volunteers are dressed in replicas of the rough, handwoven clothes of the day. They have been given the implements and animals used by Ancient Britons and are building a big, round thatched house. Each couple will have one room separated from their neighbours by a thin wall of wattle. Rough: The volunteers in their Iron Age camp. March 1977 P003579

EDITORS COMMENTS
Goodbye Britain!: Six couples and three children embark on a remarkable journey into the past, cutting themselves off from twentieth-century comforts. In this photo print, captured in March 1977, we witness their brave decision to spend an entire year living in a replica of an Iron Age settlement. Nestled deep within a remote clearing in the enchanting woodlands of the West Country, these modern-day pioneers have willingly become guinea-pigs for a groundbreaking BBC-TV series. Dressed in authentic replicas of rough handwoven clothing from 300 BC, these courageous volunteers immerse themselves fully into the ancient British way of life. With implements and animals used by our ancestors at their disposal, they are diligently constructing a magnificent round thatched house as their new abode. Each couple will enjoy one room separated by wattle walls from their neighbors. This extraordinary social experiment not only offers us a glimpse into our rich history but also challenges our perception of what it means to live without modern conveniences. As they bid farewell to all things familiar and embrace this unique opportunity, these individuals embody resilience and curiosity. Through this evocative photograph taken by Mirrorpix's lens, we are transported back to that pivotal moment when ordinary people became time travelers; venturing beyond the boundaries of comfort to explore humanity's roots.
