EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1960s, immersing us in the rich history of Great Western Railways. Standing proudly at its home, we see the magnificent Great Western Railways 6100 class steam locomotive no 6106. This iconic engine was a true marvel of engineering, built at Swindon in May 1931. Having faithfully served for over three decades, this majestic locomotive was withdrawn from service at the Oxford depot in 1967. However, its story did not end there. The Great Western Society recognized its significance and purchased it while still in working order. Temporarily housed in the old Taplow goods shed, which had been transformed into a small depot by the Society, this beloved steam engine awaited its final destination - Didcot. In October 1967, with great care and admiration for their new acquisition, the locomotive was moved to the main shed at Didcot. The image captures a moment frozen in time on February 5th, 1969 - a testament to both preservation and restoration efforts undertaken by passionate individuals dedicated to keeping our railway heritage alive. This evocative photograph transports us back to an era when steam engines ruled the tracks; it is a reminder of how far we have come while honoring those who paved our way forward.
