Lots of faffen and lots of fuffen made a Clifton fair a sure success

Lots of faffen and lots of fuffen made a Clifton fair a sure success, and obviously having a good time at the event are youngsters from Clifton Pre-School Playgroup and Mothers and Toddlers Club on their float. The annual Clifton Faffen Fuffen Fair was opened by the Vicar the Rev Adrian Richardson and a procession, led by Clifton and Lightcliffe Band made its way to the playing fields. The 30-strong Faffen Fuffen Band featuring instruments such as rubbing boards, combs and paper, was led by accordionist Mr Trevor Nicholson. At the back of the procession was a decorated pick-up truck containing a real live pig - to tie in with the story of a pig standing on a wall to listen to a band. Other attractions at the fair, which raised more than £ 600 for Clifton Village Community Association, included a gymkhana, a display by Batons Unlimited Majorettes, of Bradford, and an art exhibition. 30th August 1986. © Mirrorpix

EDITORS COMMENTS

Capturing the joy and excitement of a bygone era, this print takes us back to the vibrant Clifton Faffen Fuffen Fair in 1986. The event was an undeniable success, thanks to the abundance of faffen and fuffen that filled the air with laughter and merriment. On their beautifully decorated float, we see youngsters from Clifton Pre-School Playgroup and Mothers and Toddlers Club, radiating pure delight. The fair commenced with great pomp as it was opened by none other than the esteemed Vicar, Rev Adrian Richardson. Led by the enchanting melodies of Clifton and Lightcliffe Band, a lively procession made its way towards the playing fields. However, stealing everyone's attention was undoubtedly the peculiar yet captivating 30-strong Faffen Fuffen Band. With instruments crafted from rubbing boards, combs, and paper, they created a symphony like no other under accordionist Mr Trevor Nicholson's guidance. Adding an unexpected twist to this whimsical affair was a real live pig perched atop a decorated pick-up truck at the rear of the procession. This charming addition paid homage to a local tale about a musical pig on a wall – truly showcasing Clifton's unique spirit. Beyond these delightful sights were numerous attractions that entertained visitors throughout the day. From thrilling gymkhana events to mesmerizing performances by Batons Unlimited Majorettes from Bradford; there was something for everyone at this beloved community gathering. Moreover, an art exhibition showcased local talent while raising funds exceeding £600 for Clifton Village Community Association. This nostalgic snapshot transports us back in time when childhood memories were made amidst dressing up in costumes and exploring magical fairs like these.
