Singing in the rain turned out to be a wise choice of theme for Meltham carnival
Singing in the rain turned out to be a wise choice of theme for Meltham carnival. Committee member Mrs Susan Bray said the theme had been chosen as a joke; " It usually rains on the day, so we made sure that everyone would be prepared". Floats and fancy dress costumes included swimming and Noahs Ark. Seen lining up under their brollies are entrants in the fancy dress contest. The carnival was opened by Colne Valley MP Graham Riddick. 7th July 1990

Singing in the Rain - A Wise Choice for Meltham Carnival
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1990, we are transported back to the lively and rain-soaked streets of Meltham during their annual carnival. The theme of "Singing in the Rain" was not only a clever choice but also a practical one, as committee member Mrs Susan Bray reveals with a touch of humor. Knowing that rain often graced their special day, they ensured everyone came prepared. The floats and fancy dress costumes showcased an array of imaginative interpretations, including swimming-themed ensembles and even Noah's Ark. As captured in this snapshot, participants eagerly lined up under colorful umbrellas, adding splashes of vibrancy against the gray sky. Colne Valley MP Graham Riddick had the honor of inaugurating this spirited event, which brought together families from all over West Yorkshire. Laughter filled the air as children embraced both the whimsy and unpredictability that rainy weather can bring. This photograph is more than just a nostalgic glimpse into Meltham's past; it encapsulates the resilience and lightheartedness of its community. Despite knowing what awaited them each year, they chose to celebrate rather than lament nature's unpredictable downpours. As we look upon this image today, we are reminded that sometimes embracing life's unexpected twists can lead to joyous moments shared by all.
