EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to December 1969 in Dungeness, Kent. The annual Tug O war battle of the sexes is captured outside the iconic Pilot Pub, where over 100 enthusiastic participants gather for this exhilarating contest. Men versus women, no holds barred - it's a spectacle that never fails to ignite fierce competition. The atmosphere is electric as both teams dig their heels into the ground, gripping tightly onto the sturdy rope. Determination etched on their faces, they strain with every ounce of strength in an attempt to overpower their opponents. This year's battle witnessed an impressive display of resilience and teamwork from both sides. Under the watchful eye of referee Frank Paine, a skilled mechanic aboard the Mabel Holland lifeboat stationed at Dungeness, tensions rise as each pull brings victory closer or slips further away. Cheers erupt from the crowd as one team gains ground while groans echo through the air when momentum shifts. Ultimately, it was the women who emerged triumphant in this seventh edition of the contest by winning two pulls out of three. Their collective power and unwavering determination proved too much for their male counterparts on this occasion. This photograph not only captures a thrilling moment in time but also reflects a tradition that unites communities through spirited competition. It serves as a reminder that even amidst everyday routines and responsibilities, there is always room for friendly rivalry and celebration within our lives.
