Monktonhall was one of the Scottish super pits sunk in the 1950

Monktonhall was one of the Scottish super pits sunk in the 1950s intended to supply the new generation of Power stations. They were the most modern and well equipped mines in the country. They were sunk to deeper levels and mostly had to deal with challenging mining conditions at deeper levels than the previous generation of mines. Monktonhall was sunk to a depth of 930 meters making it one of the deepest mines. Throughout its life it suffered from water ingress. It was scheduled for closure along with the rest of the deep mines in Scotland following Thatchers miners strike and subsequent privatisations.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1990s, capturing a significant moment in Scotland's mining history. The image showcases Peter Dempster, a dedicated mine worker at Monktonhall Colliery, one of the renowned Scottish super pits that were established in the 1950s. These super pits were designed to meet the growing demand for coal as power stations emerged across the nation. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and considered some of the most advanced mines in Scotland, they operated at unprecedented depths compared to their predecessors. Monktonhall Colliery was particularly remarkable, reaching an astonishing depth of 930 meters – making it one of the deepest mines ever sunk. However, throughout its existence, this colliery faced numerous challenges such as water ingress which posed constant difficulties for miners like Peter Dempster. Sadly, following Thatcher's miners strike and subsequent privatizations in Scotland's coal industry, Monktonhall Colliery was slated for closure along with other deep mines. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to the resilience and dedication exhibited by individuals like Peter Dempster who worked tirelessly within these treacherous conditions. It offers us a glimpse into an era when coal played a vital role in powering our society while reminding us of the profound impact that political decisions can have on communities dependent on industries facing decline.
