From little acorns grow... handling a rather large shovel is little Stephanie Rose, four. She and her pals from Reinwood Junior School and Brownies from St Cuthbertss Church, Birkby, have raised £ 280 to buy 10 red oaks to plant in Greenhead Park. The children raised the money from sponsored discos, clean-ups and swims. Teacher Mr Stephen Broadberry said the shortage of trees in Greenhead Park - a result of Dutch elm disease - had inspired the project. He said the exercise would make the children aware of their surroundings. 8th February 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
From little acorns grow. . . handling a rather large shovel is little Stephanie Rose, four. She and her pals from Reinwood Junior School and Brownies from St Cuthbert's Church, Birkby, have raised £280 to buy 10 red oaks to plant in Greenhead Park. The children raised the money from sponsored discos, clean-ups, and swims. Teacher Mr Stephen Broadberry said the shortage of trees in Greenhead Park - a result of Dutch elm disease - had inspired the project. He wanted to make the children aware of their surroundings and teach them about nature conservation. In this heartwarming print captured on February 8th, 1989, we see Stephanie Rose proudly wielding a large shovel as she prepares to plant one of the ten red oak saplings purchased with their hard-earned funds. With determination shining in her eyes, Stephanie represents not only her own passion for environmental stewardship but also that of an entire generation eager to make a difference. This snapshot encapsulates the spirit of childhood innocence intertwined with education and environmental consciousness during the vibrant era of the 1980s. It serves as a reminder that even small actions can have significant impacts on our environment when driven by youthful enthusiasm. Stephanie's efforts alongside her fellow students stand as an enduring testament to their commitment towards creating a greener future for themselves and generations yet to come.
