Ely Hospital - Ely Hospital, Cardiff held an open day
Ely Hospital - Ely Hospital, Cardiff held an open day yesterday (Wed) and members of the public were invited to tour the hospital. One of the old wards at the hospital. *FROM the time it opened as a Poor Law institution for orphaned children in 1862, Ely Hospital was a destination for people who had no families to care for them. In some cases, this was because members of their close family had died n but in others the reason was altogether darker. In the late 1940s a 15-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital because she was pregnant and unmarried. After having her baby there, which went on to be adopted, the girl stayed on. When the hospital closed more than half a century later in 1997, the girl n now a pensioner n was one of the first patients to be resettled in the surrounding community. One former staff member who remembered the woman, who has not been named in order to protect her identity, said: iShe didnit have a learning disability when she went in, but she left the hospital diagnosed with having one.i 30th June 1971

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse into the history of Ely Hospital in Cardiff. Once a Poor Law institution for orphaned children, this hospital became a refuge for those who had no families to care for them. The image showcases one of the old wards, evoking memories and stories from its past. From its establishment in 1862 until its closure in 1997, Ely Hospital played host to individuals with diverse backgrounds and circumstances. It was not only a place where tragedy struck due to the loss of close family members but also where darker secrets were hidden away. One such story tells of a young girl admitted in the late 1940s because she was unmarried and pregnant. After giving birth to her child, who was subsequently adopted, she remained within the hospital's walls. As time passed and society evolved, efforts were made to reintegrate patients back into their communities. When Ely Hospital closed its doors after more than half a century of service, this woman - now an elderly pensioner - was among the first patients resettled outside its confines. However, her journey through Ely Hospital left an indelible mark on her life as she departed with a diagnosis of having acquired learning disabilities during her stay. Preserved by photographer Lewis on June 30th, 1971, this print allows us to reflect upon the complex history that unfolded within these walls while honoring those whose lives intersected with Ely Hospital's legacy.
