At a speech in Fulton Missouri in March 1946 Winston Churchill spoke of an " Iron Curtain" descending across Europe, splitting east from west. By April of 1948 his sombre prophecy appeared to have become reality. A monetary crisis in East Germany had led to a Russian blockade of traffic into West Berlin. Russia, angry at what they believed was a Western plot to take control of Germany decided to make the first move. West Berlin was isolated from the outside world. Goods and food were not allowed to enter the city, not even from Soviet controlled East Berlin. The Red Army took control of road and rail links and a major international crisis was developing. The three powers in official control of Berlin, America, France and the UK decided to airlift food and medical supplies into the isolated city. Around 2, 500 tons had to be dropped daily just to provide the minimum amount of food necessary. Planes took off from airbases in West Germany, mainly Hanover.
