The Frontier of Fear. 23rd december 1979. "Frohliche Weihnachten"

The Frontier of Fear. 23rd december 1979. "Frohliche Weihnachten" - Merry Christmas, called John Knight across the East/West German Border towards the silent, unsmiling guards who patrol the most un-natural division between one country and another in the world. In 20 years, the East Germans haven't once said Good Morning to their military counterparts whose job is to prevent their own countrymen escaping to the West, with vicuous dogs to supplement the tripwires and Russian made 7.63mm Kalashnikov machine guns. During their two years conscripted service the East Germans are paid £3 a month and are under instructions to shoot any colleague who makes a dash for the frontier. Our Picture Shows: Two East German border guards watching their Western colleagues from a watch tower on the Berlin Wall

By the end of October 1956 the fighting between the pro soviet communists and hastily organised militas had almost stopped. The new government formally disbanded the State Security Police and pledged to re-establish free elections. They also announced their willingness to negotiate with the USSR the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Hungary and the countrys withdrawal from the Warsaw pact. On November 4th a large Soviet force invaded Hungary. In the retaking of the country 700 Russian soldiers and over 2500 Hungarians were killed in the fighting. The Hungarian revolt was finally supressed on November 10th 1956
