Ruins at Ypres Belgium during World War One. Ypres

Ruins at Ypres Belgium during World War One.
Ypres, or Wipers as it became known to the British soldier, was the scene of heavy fighting in spring 1915. For all the expenditure of effort, machinery and above all else men, relatively little was actually gained by either side. Most fighting was concentrated around a small hill just outside the town, deemed to be of immense strategic importance. Not only was the fighting heay, but it also revealed a new menace, gas.
For the first time, but sadly not the last, chemical gas, in this instance Chlorine gas, was used by the German army. Its effects were of course terrifying, but in this instance they were worsened because the Allied troops simply weren t prepared. They hadn t been issued with gas masks and instead were advised to go into battle with wet cloths over their mouths.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the ruins of Ypres, Belgium during World War One. Known as "Wipers" among British soldiers, this once thriving town became a haunting symbol of the heavy fighting that took place in spring 1915. Despite the immense efforts and sacrifices made by both sides, little ground was gained. The focal point of the battles was a small hill just outside Ypres, deemed strategically crucial. However, it wasn't only conventional warfare that plagued these lands; a new menace emerged - gas. The German army unleashed chlorine gas for the first time in history, causing unimaginable terror among Allied troops who were ill-prepared for such an attack. In this poignant image from April 1915, we witness not only the physical devastation but also glimpse into the psychological toll inflicted upon those involved in this brutal conflict. The ruins stand as silent witnesses to countless lives lost and shattered dreams. As we reflect on this photograph from Memory Lane Prints, let us remember the resilience and sacrifice of those who fought amidst these ruins. May their bravery serve as a reminder of our duty to strive for peace and ensure that such horrors are never repeated again.
