Last Journey in the trolleybus May 1962
Crowds turned up in huge numbers to take one final and very sentimental jouney in a trolleybus. The last trolley buses were taken out of service by London Transport on the 8th May 1962. They were replaced by the petrol driven buses Routemasters, some of which are still in use on Londons streets today. However, whilst this seemed to be an end of an era, a modern version of trams have started to reappear on the streets of some of Britains cities. In Manchester the Metro opened in the early nineties and has been very succesful, and Croydon in South London will shortly have the Croydon Tramlink.

Last Journey in the Trolleybus, May 1962 - A Sentimental Farewell
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to May 1962, witnessing a poignant moment in London's transportation history. Crowds of people have gathered in massive numbers to bid farewell to the beloved trolleybuses on their last journey. Emotions run high as passengers and onlookers alike share a sense of nostalgia for an era coming to an end. London Transport made the decision to retire these iconic trolleybuses on May 8th, 1962, replacing them with petrol-driven Routemasters. Little did they know that this would mark not just the end of one chapter but also the beginning of another. Today, some Routemasters still roam London's streets; a testament to their enduring charm. However, while it seemed like an irreversible shift towards modernization at that time, recent years have seen a resurgence of trams across Britain's cities. Manchester proudly opened its Metro system in the early nineties—a resounding success—and Croydon is eagerly awaiting its own Tramlink. This evocative photograph captures not only a historical moment but also serves as a reminder that progress does not always mean forgetting our past. The image speaks volumes about our collective attachment to public transport and how it shapes our memories and experiences. (Photo by Alisdair MacDonald | © Mirrorpix 2002)
