This Supermarine S6 seaplane was Britains entry in the annual Schneider Cup Races

This Supermarine S6 seaplane was Britains entry in the annual Schneider Cup Races 1928. Here, R J Mitchell, the aircrafts designer, supervising work by searchlight at Calshott during August 1928.
The S6, flown by F/O H R Waghorn, went on to win the race at an average speed of 328.6mph. Much that was gained from the design and operation of these racing aeroplanes went towards the success of Mitchells Supermarine Spitfire.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1928, where Britain's entry in the prestigious Schneider Cup Races takes center stage. The Supermarine S6 seaplane, meticulously designed by R J Mitchell, is being supervised by its brilliant creator under the illuminating glow of a searchlight at Calshott. The S6, piloted by F/O H R Waghorn, would go on to claim victory in the race with an astounding average speed of 328.6mph. This triumph not only marked a significant milestone for British aviation but also laid the foundation for future successes such as Mitchell's iconic creation - the Supermarine Spitfire. Reginald Mitchell himself can be seen standing confidently on the right side of this historic image, donning his fashionable plus fours trousers. With unwavering dedication and expertise, he oversees every detail of work being carried out on this remarkable seaplane even late into the night at 10pm. Ensuring utmost security during these crucial operations is an armed guard positioned nearby with rifle and bayonet. Their presence serves as a reminder of both the military significance and technological advancements associated with this extraordinary aircraft. As we gaze upon this snapshot from history captured by Memory Lane Prints, we are reminded of how innovation and determination paved the way for progress in aviation during those atmospheric days of early flight.
