EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elegance and power of the De Havilland D. H. 114 Heron four-engine feeder-liner. A remarkable development from its twin-engine predecessor, the Dove, this aircraft was designed to transport up to 17 passengers with ease. The Mk. 1 version boasted a fixed undercarriage and took to the skies for the first time on 10 May 1950, soaring above Hatfield. However, it was the Mk. 2 that truly stole the show when it made its maiden flight on 14 December 1952 with its retractable undercarriage system in place. This enhanced model quickly gained popularity among British airlines and aviation enthusiasts worldwide, resulting in approximately 150 units being produced before production ceased. In this particular image captured at the prestigious S. B. A. C Show held at Farnborough in September 1954, we witness one of seven Mk. 2Bs proudly showcased by Turkish Airlines. The sleek design and impeccable craftsmanship of this aircraft are evident as it stands against a backdrop of excitement and anticipation. It is worth noting that this photograph also holds historical significance as it marks an endearing moment - the last scheduled flight from Croydon Airport on September 30th, 1959 was conducted by a Heron 1b variant. Croydon Airport had witnessed countless pre-war aviation triumphs, making this final departure bittersweet. With every detail meticulously preserved through time within this Memory Lane Print, we are reminded of an
