This 1986 photo from the Chronicle archives shows a South Shields Scottish Pipe Band who were asked to play at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. The 12th South Shields Company of the Boys Brigade Scottish Pipe Band were among 700 Scottish pipers lining the turf at Meadowbank Stadium.
Members were taught how to play the pipes by 78-year-old former pipe major, Dan McLean, from Oban who lived on South Tyneside for many years.
