The Palace Yard courtyard in Priory Row Coventry circa 1936 The yard dates from the 16th century and as the name suggests, has Royal connections. The most significant event occurred in 1605 whilst the gunpowder plot was underway. Princess Elizabeth, whos father King James I had only been on the throne for two years, had been living at Coombe Abbey, but when her life appeared to be under threat, she was moved here for safe keeping. It was this event along with the visit and stay here of King James II in 1687 that led to the name " Palace Yard". The Yard was destroyed by a German high explosive bomb on the night of 14th - 15th November 1940

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Palace Yard courtyard in Priory Row, Coventry, circa 1936. Steeped in history, this courtyard dates all the way back to the 16th century and holds a special place of significance due to its royal connections. One notable event that occurred here was during the infamous Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James I who had recently ascended the throne, sought refuge within these very walls when her life was believed to be in danger. This incident, along with King James II's visit and stay in 1687, led to the naming of this remarkable space as "Palace Yard". Unfortunately, this picturesque yard fell victim to destruction during World War II on the fateful night of November 14th-15th, 1940 when it was struck by a devastating German high explosive bomb. In this stunning photograph from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to a pre-war era where we can admire the architectural beauty of this Tudor-style courtyard. The arched windows and cobblestone ground evoke a sense of nostalgia and remind us of an era long gone. Let this image serve as a reminder not only of Coventry's rich heritage but also as a testament to resilience amidst adversity.
