Thousands of Coventry schoolkids poured into the city
Thousands of Coventry schoolkids poured into the citys Cathedral ruins for a live broadcast of BBC TVs Saturday Superstore. The children, some as young as eight, began arriving on buses at 7.30am. They presented cathedral security staff with a big headache. They youngsters scaled the walls of the ruins to find vantage points. Some were perched on ledges more than 15ft up while others used BBC ladders to get a better view. It was the first time the popular childrens show had visited Coventry. During several live links with London, roving presenter Keith Chegwin introduced the City of Coventry Corps of Drums and a line-up of cars from the citys museum of road transport representing leading car-makers past and present. Millions of TV viewers saw tiny Samantha Hart set an unofficial new record for the number of bounces on the shows huge inflatable dragon in one minute.
