The future of an agreement between the Meriden motor cycle workers

The future of an agreement between the Meriden motor cycle workers co-operative and Norton Villiers Triumph now rests on the outcome of a meeting at Small Heath on Friday. The Industry Secretary Mr. Anthony Wedgewood Benn has agreed to meet NVTs 1, 200 Small Heath workers to spell out details of the three-cornered agreement between government, the co-operative and the company. The company have said they will not sign any deal untill their Small heath workers are satisfied it will not affect their future. Hopes of an immemdiate signing suffered a set-back yesterday when Mr. Benn met the Small Heath shop stewards and stewards from NVTs Wolverhampton factory. Both the co-operative and NVT management attended the talks at the Department of Industry in London. The Meriden workers had hoped that Mr. Benn would persuade the Small heath stewards to give their approval on the spot. Co-perative leaders were today expected to report back to the 300 workers still sitting in at the plant. A further 800- out of the original 1, 700 labour force - have said they would be willing to work for the co-operative. This photo shows the Co-operative team, including Mr. Geoffrey Robinson(fifth from right) outside the Department of Industry offices in London before the talks.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on November 5th, 1974, we catch a glimpse of the intense negotiations taking place between the Meriden motorcycle workers co-operative and Norton Villiers Triumph (NVT). The future of an agreement between these two entities hangs in the balance as they await the outcome of a crucial meeting at Small Heath. Industry Secretary Mr. Anthony Wedgewood Benn has graciously agreed to meet with NVT's 1,200 Small Heath workers to provide them with detailed information about the three-cornered agreement involving government intervention. However, hopes for an immediate signing were dampened when Mr. Benn met with both the Small Heath shop stewards and stewards from NVT's Wolverhampton factory. The company insists that no deal will be signed until their Small Heath workers are fully satisfied that it will not jeopardize their future. As this photograph captures members of the Co-operative team outside London's Department of Industry offices before these pivotal talks commence, one can sense both determination and anxiety etched on their faces. Amongst them stands Mr. Geoffrey Robinson, positioned fifth from right - a key figure in these negotiations. Meanwhile, back at Meriden plant where 300 workers remain steadfastly seated during this critical period, co-operative leaders eagerly anticipate updates from today's discussions. Encouragingly, another 800 individuals out of the original labor force have expressed willingness to work for the co-operative if an agreement is reached. This evocative image serves as a poignant reminder of how high stakes decisions can shape not only individual futures but also impact entire communities dependent on industries like motorcycle manufacturing.
