Although British Railways officially finished with steam power on August 11, 1968

Although British Railways officially finished with steam power on August 11, 1968, Alan Peglers contract still allowed him to run Flying Scotsman on the mainline. As the sole steam locomotive on BR, a good crowd turn out to see it at Leamington Spa on September 30, 1968. Preservation excursions took the locomotive far from its East Coast Mainline home, as here onto the alien metals of the ex-Great Western Railway, but a mere warm-up for its travels across the world.
Picture shows: Railway enthusiasts give an enthusiastic welcome at Leamington railway station for the Flying Scotsman.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a significant moment in British railway history. It was the year 1968, when steam power officially bid farewell to British Railways. However, there was one exception - Alan Pegler's contract allowed him to continue running the iconic Flying Scotsman on the mainline. This privilege attracted a large crowd of enthusiastic railway enthusiasts at Leamington Spa on September 30th. The image captures the essence of this historic event as it showcases a sea of eager faces eagerly awaiting the arrival of Flying Scotsman. The excitement is palpable, with people gathered around Leamington railway station, their eyes fixed on the tracks ahead. The anticipation builds as they prepare to witness this legendary locomotive in action. Although Flying Scotsman ventured far from its usual East Coast Mainline route for preservation excursions onto unfamiliar ex-Great Western Railway tracks, this journey merely served as a warm-up for its future travels across the globe. This photograph not only commemorates an important milestone in Britain's rail heritage but also immortalizes the passion and dedication of train enthusiasts who turned out in droves to witness history unfold before their very eyes.
