Children playing dustbins on a slum housing estate 1st June 1962 Featured 00001 Print

Children playing dustbins on a slum housing estate 1st June 1962

Children playing dustbins on a slum housing estate 1st June 1962.
Taken from a set of pictures showing slum housing in post war Britain. These pictures were taken to highlight the plight of many families in Britain who even into the sixties were forced by economic factors to live in slum dwellings. In London much of the slum housing was destroyed in the Blitz. However, other British cities particularly in the North and Midlands had large scale housing problems. After the WW2 much of the rebuilding concentrated on the South East as it had been hit hardest by the Luftwaffe. However, these cities with existing and pressing housing problems were to an extent left alone. As a result local councils couldn't afford to clear away neglected and cramped properties. Slum housing was often poorly heated and ventilated, structurally unsound, very cramped (a condition worsened by the fact that they were often inhabited by large families) and often isolated from services and amenities

Trainspotting became a mania for the nation's young males in the 1950s

Trainspotting became a mania for the nation's young males in the 1950s. Heads bowed in obeisance to their obsession, a gaggle stand at London Waterloo, in August 1952. Youth culture is just rearing its head as there is a division between the junior oiks and the teenagers with drainpipe trousers edging in. Still, at least you knew where all the kids were. *** Local Caption *** Trainspotters at Waterloo station

Goathland Plough Yorkshire County dance team performing ancient ceremony of dancing Featured 00001 Print

Goathland Plough Yorkshire County dance team performing ancient ceremony of dancing

Goathland Plough Yorkshire County dance team performing ancient ceremony of dancing before every house in village of Goatland, Yorks.
The Goathland Plough Stots are a rare example of a once widespread rural tradition that acknowledged the importance of the plough and celebrated it with sword dancing, music and folk plays. Similar traditions are known to have existed in other parts of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Northumberland, where they were known as the Plough Boys, Bullock Lads, Ploo Jags (plough Jacks) and the Fond or Fool Plough'.
