A soldiers farewell kiss to his bride on their wedding night was watched by exactly 834 other soldiers and seventy-two Wrafs last night. The sympathetic " extras" clapped as the soldier embraced his blonde bride; they cheerd as he kissed her, and groaned as he said " Goodnight and goodbye". Then the soldier Sergent Herbert Charlton 29, of Lower Hustings-street Leicester turned on his heel and marched up the gang-plank of the trooper Empire Halladale at Liverpool Docks.
His bride, Therese Maria Hein, 29, of Munsters, Germany had hurried to England when Sergeant Churlton heard his regiment was going overseas.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant moment frozen in time, we witness the bittersweet farewell of a soldier and his bride on their wedding night. As they stood amidst a sea of uniforms, exactly 834 soldiers and seventy-two Wrafs watched with both admiration and empathy. The air was thick with anticipation as the "extras" clapped in support when the soldier embraced his blonde bride. With each passing second, emotions intensified as he leaned in for a tender kiss. The crowd erupted into cheers, celebrating their love and unity. But as reality set in, hearts sank collectively when he uttered those dreaded words: "Goodnight and goodbye". Sergeant Herbert Charlton, aged 29 from Lower Hustings-street Leicester, resolutely turned away from his beloved wife Therese Maria Hein to march up the gang-plank of the trooper Empire Halladale at Liverpool Docks. His duty called him overseas while she remained behind. Therese had hurriedly traveled from Munsters, Germany upon hearing that her husband's regiment would be deployed abroad. Their union was marked by sacrifice even before it truly began. This evocative print captures not only their profound love but also serves as a testament to countless couples torn apart by war during this tumultuous period in history - May 1949. Let us remember these brave souls who fought for our freedom and honor the enduring power of love that transcends all boundaries – physical or otherwise.
