EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Submarine in a Backyard" takes us back to the 1950s, where innovation and determination knew no bounds. Monsieur Jean Rousseau, a skilled mechanic working for General Engineering enterprises in Paris, found himself with an extraordinary invention on his hands - an underwater life-saving apparatus. However, despite his best efforts to garner interest and support for his creation, nobody seemed willing to give it a chance. Undeterred by the lack of enthusiasm from others, Monsieur Rousseau decided to prove the worthiness of his invention by building himself a one-man submarine. As he delved deeper into this new endeavor, he became so engrossed in perfecting the submarine that he forgot about adapting it for life-saving purposes. The cost of this ambitious project amounted to 500,000 francs – a testament to Jean's unwavering dedication. Finally ready to showcase his creation and demonstrate its capabilities, Jean exhibited his remarkable sub at Concours Lepine. With great courage and conviction, he embarked on 25 dives in the Seine River during December 1953. This photograph captures not only Monsieur Rousseau's incredible ingenuity but also reflects an era when human curiosity pushed boundaries beyond imagination. It serves as a reminder that sometimes our greatest achievements come from pursuing our passions against all odds - even if they deviate from their original purpose.
