Nurse runs babies back-garden "swimming pool"
Nurse runs babies back-garden " swimming pool".
Marjorie Wood, staff nurse at the Hampstead (London) Woodchurch Day Nursery, and enthusiastic swimmer, persuaded the matron to have a shallow wooden trough erected in the garden, with water supplied from a hose.
On fine days her young charges bathe, shower and paddle in the trough; they play games in the garden, they return to the trough to do a little laundry. Washing dolls clothes is a popular play lesson. Many of the children have never had a sea-side holiday. The children also use their Day Nursery " swimming pool" to do a little laundry. The baby girls think washing dolls clothes is their best play lesson. September 1948 P012135

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a heartwarming scene from the past, showcasing the innovative and caring nature of Nurse Marjorie Wood. In her role as a staff nurse at the Hampstead Woodchurch Day Nursery in London during September 1948, she went above and beyond to create a unique experience for the children under her care. With her love for swimming and determination to provide joyous moments, Nurse Wood convinced the matron to set up a shallow wooden trough in their back garden. Connected to a hose, this makeshift "swimming pool" became an oasis of fun for the young charges on sunny days. The children would bathe, shower, and paddle in the refreshing water while engaging in playful games amidst laughter and excitement. This simple yet ingenious creation also served practical purposes beyond recreation. As some of these children had never experienced seaside holidays before, they used their newfound "swimming pool" not only for play but also as an opportunity to learn essential life skills. They would return to it after frolicking around the garden to do laundry – washing dolls' clothes became their favorite play lesson. Nurse Marjorie Wood's dedication shines through this snapshot of domestic life from decades ago. Her initiative brought happiness and educational experiences into these children's lives when resources were limited. This image reminds us that even small gestures can leave lasting impressions on those we care for most dearly.
