EDITORS COMMENTS
Dame Margot Fonteyn, a timeless icon of grace and beauty, captured in this stunning 1960 photograph. As the British prima ballerina and President of the Royal Academy of Dancing for over three decades, she left an indelible mark on the world of ballet. Born in 1919, Fonteyn's journey to greatness began under the tutelage of George Concharu in Shanghai before she returned to England to study at Sadlers Wells Ballet school. Her debut in 1934 marked the start of a meteoric rise that saw her assume leading roles in iconic ballets such as Giselle, Swan Lake, and Sleeping Beauty within just five years. In 1955, Fonteyn married Panamanian diplomat Roberto Arias and embarked on a legendary partnership with Rudolf Nureyev from 1962 onwards. Together they mesmerized audiences with their performances in Giselle and Romeo and Juliet. Fonteyn's exceptional talent earned her the prestigious title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta in 1979 – one of only three dancers ever bestowed with this honor by the Imperial Russian Ballet and its successors. After retiring to Panama to care for her sick husband until his passing in 1989, Dame Margot Fonteyn found herself living in poverty. However, thanks to a heartfelt campaign launched on her behalf by supporters back home in Britain, she was able to regain some stability. This print serves as both a tribute to Dame
