1840 Amenophis Attributed Called Cord Dawn Day Break Goddess I Ii Memnon Snapping Sound Statues Thebes Weeping Emit

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph captures the enigmatic Memnon Statues 1, also known as the Colossi of Memnon, located in Thebes, Egypt. Dating back to the 18th Dynasty, around 1350 BC, these colossal stone statues represent Pharaoh Amenhotep III (circa 1525-1493 BC) in a seated position, with each statue standing approximately 18 meters (59 feet) high. The intriguing legend surrounding these statues is rooted in ancient Greek mythology. According to the myth, Memnon was a king of Ethiopia and the son of Eos, the goddess of the Dawn. Eos was said to have wept for her son, who was killed during the Trojan War, at the break of every day, causing the statues to emit a sound like the snapping of a cord. This phenomenon was believed to occur around sunrise, adding an ethereal and mystical dimension to the already impressive structures. Despite numerous theories, the origin of the sound remains a mystery. Some believe it may be due to the natural expansion and contraction of the sandstone as temperatures change, while others attribute it to the wind or the movement of the Nile River. Regardless, the Memnon Statues continue to captivate and intrigue visitors, offering a glimpse into the rich history and mythology of ancient Egypt." This photograph, taken in the early 1840s, captures the awe-inspiring presence of the Memnon Statues, standing tall against the backdrop of the desert landscape. The image invites us to ponder the mysteries of the past and the enduring allure of ancient history.
