This evocative Medieval print depicts Hereward the Wake, a legendary English rebel leader from the late 11th century, surrounded by his drunken men at a riotous feast. Hereward, dressed in furs and wearing a horned helmet, sits at the head of the table, his gaze fixed intently on Martin Lightfoot, who is depicted at the far left of the image, clutching a letter and making his way towards the door. Hereward's expression suggests that he has just realized the gravity of the situation and that action must be taken to prevent Martin from departing with the important missive. The scene is one of debauchery and excess, with the men around the table drinking from tankards and toasting one another with pieces of bread.
