The decision to retreat was a difficult one for McClellan, who had initially hoped to outmaneuver the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee. However, the Union forces were outflanked, and McClellan was forced to abandon his position. As the Union troops retreated, they were ordered to destroy stores and forage to prevent them from falling into Confederate hands.
