This evocative image captures Union General George B. McClellan standing at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. The pivotal moment in the American Civil War, this battle marked McClellan's decisive victory over Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. However, McClellan's failure to aggressively pursue Lee's retreating forces following the battle ultimately led to his removal from command by President Abraham Lincoln. The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, was the bloodiest single-day battle in the Civil War, with over 22,000 casualties. McClellan's Army of the Potomac outnumbered Lee's forces, but the Confederate general skillfully maneuvered his troops, delaying McClellan's advance and inflicting heavy losses. Despite McClellan's victory, Lincoln grew increasingly frustrated with his general's reluctance to pursue Lee's army, fearing that the opportunity to crush the Confederate forces would be lost. McClellan's inaction allowed Lee to regroup and escape, leading to Lincoln's decision to replace him with General Ambrose Burnside.
