This evocative image captures Union General George B. McClellan standing at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. The pivotal moment in the American Civil War, this battle marked McClellan's decisive victory over Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. However, McClellan's failure to aggressively pursue Lee's retreating forces following the battle ultimately led to his removal from command by President Abraham Lincoln. The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, was the bloodiest single-day battle in the Civil War, with over 22,000 casualties.
