EDITORS COMMENTS
Matthias, the Apostle: A Historical Moment of Replacement and Renewal This evocative image captures the solemn and significant moment in Christian history when Matthias was elected as the twelfth apostle, following the betrayal and subsequent death of Judas Iscariot. The scene is set in the aftermath of the Last Supper, with the remaining eleven apostles gathered together in deep contemplation and prayer. The year is believed to be around AD 33, and the atmosphere is heavy with the weight of the events that have transpired. Judas, once a trusted disciple, had betrayed Jesus by identifying Him to the Roman soldiers, leading to His arrest, trial, and crucifixion. With Judas' departure, the disciples were left with an empty seat at their table, a void that needed to be filled. Enter Matthias, a humble and devoted follower of Jesus. The selection process for the new apostle was not an easy one, with the disciples praying and seeking guidance from God. According to the biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles (1:15-26), two candidates, Matthias and Joseph Barsabas, were put forward, and the decision was made through the drawing of lots. This image beautifully encapsulates the sense of renewal and continuity that accompanied Matthias' election. Surrounded by his fellow apostles, he takes his place at the table, ready to carry on the mission that Jesus had begun. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and enduring nature of the Christian faith, even in the face of adversity and betrayal.
