Born in Macerata, Italy, Ricci joined the Society of Jesus in 1571. In 1583, he embarked on his journey to the Far East, arriving in Goa, India, in 1585. After studying the Chinese language and culture for several years, he set out for China in 1589. Ricci's approach to evangelism was unique; he focused on understanding Chinese culture and philosophy, using local customs and symbols to convey Christian teachings.
