EDITORS COMMENTS
Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), an Italian Jesuit missionary, is depicted in this striking image, dressed in traditional Chinese attire, signifying his deep commitment to bridging the cultural divide between the East and West during the late Ming Dynasty. Ricci's pioneering work in China marked a significant milestone in the spread of Christianity, as he was one of the first Westerners to gain the trust of the Chinese elite. Born in Macerata, Italy, Ricci joined the Society of Jesus in 1571. In 1583, he embarked on his journey to the Far East, arriving in Goa, India, in 1585. After studying the Chinese language and culture for several years, he set out for China in 1589. Ricci's approach to evangelism was unique; he focused on understanding Chinese culture and philosophy, using local customs and symbols to convey Christian teachings. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the essence of Ricci's missionary work. The image shows him with a serious expression, his eyes focused intently on the viewer, as if sharing a profound message. His head is adorned with a traditional Chinese hat, and his shoulders are draped in a long, flowing robe, symbolizing his dedication to the Chinese people and their culture. Ricci's efforts bore fruit when he was granted permission to establish a Jesuit mission in Shanghai in 1595. Over the next two decades, he and his fellow missionaries translated key Christian texts into Chinese, including the Gospel of Matthew and the Catechism. Ricci's work paved the way for the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church in China and contributed significantly to the rich history of intercultural exchange between Europe and China.
