1885 1949 Count Countess Danish Matilda Rosenborg

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Matilda, Countess of Rosenborg, is captured in a tender moment with her young son. The image, taken in 1885, showcases the Danish noblewoman's striking features and the deep bond she shared with her child. Matilda, whose birth name was Princess Matilde of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, was the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and his wife, Queen Louise. In 1879, she married Aage, Count of Rosenborg, and became the Countess of Rosenborg. The couple went on to have five children together. The photograph, taken in the late 19th century, is a testament to the elegance and refinement of the Danish aristocracy during this period. Matilda's elegant gown and the ornate decor of the room in which the photograph was taken are reminiscent of the opulence and grandeur of the Danish royal court. Despite her privileged upbringing and position as a member of the Danish royal family, Matilda is depicted here as a loving and devoted mother. Her gentle expression and the tender way she cradles her son's head reveal the deep connection between them. The photograph offers a glimpse into the private world of the Rosenborg family and provides a poignant reminder of the enduring bond between a mother and her child. Matilda's life was marked by tragedy as well as joy. She lost her husband, Aage, in 1912, and her eldest son, Prince Valdemar, died in a hunting accident in 1935. Despite these losses, Matilda continued to serve her country and her family, and she was known for her charitable work and her dedication to the Danish people. This photograph, taken over a century ago, remains a beautiful and poignant reminder of Matilda, Countess of Rosenborg, and the love and devotion she shared with her family.
