EDITORS COMMENTS
Quentin Massys, also known as Quinten Metsys or Quinten Matsys, was a renowned Flemish painter of the 16th century. Born in Maeseyck, near Antwerp, around 1466, Massys is considered one of the leading figures of the Antwerp Mannerist school. This portrait, believed to be a self-portrait, showcases Massys' exceptional skill and mastery of the human form. Massys' artistic career began in the workshop of Joos van Cleve, where he learned the techniques of oil painting and the art of portraiture. He later became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1509. Massys' works are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail, subtle use of color, and a sense of realism that sets them apart from the more decorative styles of the time. This portrait, painted around 1530, depicts Massys wearing a simple, dark hat, a sign of his humility and dedication to his craft. The artist's piercing gaze and the intricately rendered folds of his clothing convey a sense of depth and intensity. The background is left unfinished, a deliberate choice that draws the viewer's focus to the subject and emphasizes the importance of the artist's presence. Massys' influence on the art world was significant, with artists such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck citing him as an inspiration. His works can be found in galleries and museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre Museum in Paris. This print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life and work of a master painter whose influence continues to be felt in the art world today.
