This evocative portrait captures Jean Papirius Masson (1544-1611), a prominent French historian and antiquarian, in the latter years of his life. Masson is depicted wearing the fashionable attire of the late 16th century, including a ruff collar and a skull cap, which was a common head covering for scholars and intellectuals during that period.
