EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the essence of the Paris Opera House during the world premiere performance of Massenet's Manon on January 19, 1884. The opera, based on the novel "Manon Lescaut" by Abbé Prévost, was a groundbreaking work in the history of French grand opera. In the center of the image, we see the renowned French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912), who penned the music for this production. With a focused expression, Massenet watches intently as the orchestra plays, his hands poised in anticipation. To his left, the esteemed French painter and sculptor Alexandre Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860) is seen engrossed in the performance, his attention divided between the stage and his sketchbook. Decamps, who designed the sets and costumes for Manon, was a regular collaborator with the Paris Opera and a leading figure in the artistic world of the time. On the right side of the photograph, we find the renowned German actor and singer Hermann von der Pahlen (1833-1891) in the role of the wealthy Chevalier des Grieux, who falls passionately in love with the titular character Manon, portrayed by the legendary French soprano Jeanne-Marie Laboureur (1836-1921). The intensity of their performance is evident in their expressive facial expressions and body language. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of 19th-century opera, offering a glimpse into the creative process and the collaboration between artists from various disciplines. The Paris Opera House, with its opulent decor and grandeur, serves as the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary moment in the history of music and theater.
