This stunning photograph captures the essence of the Paris Opera House during the world premiere performance of Massenet's Manon on January 19, 1884. The opera, based on the novel "Manon Lescaut" by Abbé Prévost, was a groundbreaking work in the history of French grand opera. In the center of the image, we see the renowned French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912), who penned the music for this production. With a focused expression, Massenet watches intently as the orchestra plays, his hands poised in anticipation. To his left, the esteemed French painter and sculptor Alexandre Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860) is seen engrossed in the performance, his attention divided between the stage and his sketchbook.
