This print depicts Masaniello Bourdet, also known as Tomasso Aniello (1620-1647), a pivotal figure in Neapolitan history. Masaniello, dressed in a striped cap and shorts, is shown with a determined expression and a raised hand, embodying the spirit of revolution. The year is 1647, a time of great unrest in Naples, Italy. Masaniello was a fisherman by trade, but his leadership and charisma ignited a rebellion against the Spanish rulers of the city. On July 7, 1647, he led a crowd of thousands in the Neapolitan insurrection, which came to be known as the Masaniello Rebellion. The uprising was fueled by the people's frustration with the high taxes, corruption, and foreign rule. Masaniello's rebellion was a turning point in Neapolitan history. It marked the end of Spanish rule and the beginning of a new era of self-governance. The rebellion also paved the way for the Bourbon dynasty to take power in Naples. Despite his revolutionary success, Masaniello's life was cut short. He was betrayed and killed by Spanish forces on August 16, 1647. Nevertheless, his legacy lived on, and he became a symbol of Neapolitan resistance and national pride.
